Historical background
Mbale Tigers Table Tennis Club (MTTTC) was originally founded in 1992 and formally established in 2003 as a social and sports club dedicated to nurturing young, disciplined, and competitive table tennis players. Our mission is to develop well-rounded athletes who excel not only in table tennis but also as leaders and contributors to society. Ultimately, we aim to build a premier Table Tennis Academy that will drive the growth of the table tennis industry in Uganda.

In partnership with Twiga and under the Laupa Luning Table Tennis Project, MTTTC has focused on using sports as a tool to cultivate leadership qualities and positive social behaviors among children in our community. Our initiatives have created numerous social benefits, including access to education, healthcare, housing, and the promotion of values such as cooperation, friendship, and civic responsibility. These efforts are formalized through a Memorandum of Understanding between the project promoters, our founder, and the local government of Mbale District in Uganda.
Our approach combines professional training, consistent practice, and competitive play, while actively contributing to the achievement of the United Nations Millennium Development Goals. Through table tennis, we empower young athletes to develop leadership skills, combat poverty and hunger, promote universal education, protect the environment, uphold human rights, and fight against HIV/AIDS.
Since 2005, the Swedish International Development Agency (SIDA), through the NGO Twiga, has generously supported MTTTC. Their contributions have enabled us to identify and train talented players and provide them with opportunities to compete at local, national, regional, and international levels. Today, children aged 6–18 dominate Uganda’s Cadet, Under-17, and Women’s national teams, with many progressing into senior men’s categories. Educational seminars and mentorship programs have transformed the social behavior, values, and attitudes of children—particularly those from Maluku slum, near our project office.
Beyond sports, MTTTC has implemented income-generating initiatives, including bicycle taxis, an internet café, and a local table tennis table workshop, with the goal of becoming a self-sustaining club. Cultural exchange programs, sponsored by SIDA and Twiga, have allowed our youth and leaders to travel to Sweden, train in elite clubs like Angby and Mariedal Sports Clubs, and participate in competitions, conferences, and experiential learning.
Our work has received international recognition. UN Habitat awarded MTTTC a Certificate of Merit for youth involvement, and the model has been recommended for replication across East Africa. The leadership of the Government of Uganda, the African Table Tennis Federation (ATTF), the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF), and the wider Ugandan table tennis community recognize MTTTC as a leading sports organization—one that exemplifies how table tennis can drive career development, job creation, income generation, and social transformation across Africa.
At Mbale Tigers Table Tennis Club, we don’t just train athletes—we shape leaders, build communities, and inspire a future where table tennis is more than a sport; it’s a pathway to opportunity and positive change.
