MBALE TIGERS YOUTH DEVELOPMENT MODEL HAILED AT CONFERENCE

The 5 day conference hosted by Forum Syd at Lidingö Hotel in Sweden ended saturday 8th December with a call for Swedish NGOs operating in Gambia, Liberia, South Africa, India, Indonesia, Ukrain, Siberia among others to emulate methods of develpoment of young people using sports as a factor for development.

Mbale Tigers Table Tennis Club that works as a partner organization with TWIGA a local Swedish NGO with Projects in Kenya and India made an impressive presentation that called for more support from TWIGA and SIDA.

As a sports club it has a record performance of identifying talented children, trained them and exposed them to local national and international competitions.

According to the Executive Director of the Project and now Pressident of Uganda Table Tennis Association, sports development go along with life skills including the fight against HIV/AIDS, Environmental Protection, Human Rights, Gender issues, Leadership, knowledge about sports injuries. In essence this means that the more skilled players we groom as players the more need to have coaches, umpires and aadministrators of Table Tennis in Uganda.

It is then projected that a Table Tennis industry is an inevitable end and means to this endeavour and we would definitely need a Table Tennis academy and factory if we shall have a dependable source of equipment and tools on one hand and the other hand an institution that would better handle the process of  training the identified talents.

An intergrated and self sustaining Table Tennis industry is the best idea and this is what Mbale Tigers is focusing on after the conference.

Emmanuel and Rita will in the remaining days after the conference meet the leadership of Table Tennis Clubs in Sweden that would twin with Ugandan Clubs under Uganda Table Tennis Association and also share some experiences with the 4 swedish young players visiting Uganda next march 2008 for a cultural exchange program.

Twiga says, that Mbale Tigers shall be very proud of being picked to attend the seminar in Stockholm. Forum Syd supports several project and only two of them were invited to the conference to give other organisation inspiration. All organisations that attended yesterdays seminar were impressed of how Mbale Tigers use the method of sports as a tool for development. Also Forum Syd said that the conference have brought up new innovative ideas, especially thanks to Mbale Tigers and Twiga.
